Our Mission
Restoring American Magnesium Production
U.S. Green Magnesium, a Jean Boulle Group company, is developing a fundamentally new approach to magnesium metal production on American soil.
Using a patented carbothermic process with supersonic nozzle technology, we aim to deliver magnesium that is both cleaner and cheaper to produce than the energy-intensive Chinese Pidgeon process that accounts for 95% of world production.
The technology has been developed with over $5M in investment from the Jean Boulle Group, and USGM has recently been selected for a U.S. Department of Energy HPC4EI grant to advance the process further using high-performance computing at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
The last American magnesium smelter closed in 2022. Today, the U.S. imports virtually all of its magnesium — a material classified as critical to national security by the Department of Defense.
How It Works
From Raw Mineral to High-Purity Metal
Our patented process replaces the energy-intensive Pidgeon method with a continuous carbothermic flow.
Carbothermic Reduction
Our feedstock is reduced using carbon at high temperature, producing magnesium vapour without ferrosilicon reductant.
Supersonic Condensation
Vapour is shock-cooled through our proprietary nozzle design, preventing the back-reaction that has blocked previous carbothermic attempts for decades.
Continuous Collection
Solid magnesium particles are collected continuously — no batch cycling, no downtime, dramatically reducing labor costs.
High-Purity Output
The result is premium-grade magnesium metal, made in the USA, ready for automotive, aerospace, and defense applications.
Strategic Edge
Why USGM Is Different
Advanced Clean Technology
Our patented process uses a proprietary nozzle design to shock-cool magnesium vapour, preventing the back-reaction that has blocked carbothermic methods for decades. The result is a continuous-flow process that eliminates the need for ferrosilicon reductant — dramatically cutting energy use and emissions.
Pilot-Validated
The core process has been validated at pilot scale, with over $5M invested by the Jean Boulle Group.
Cost Leadership
Significantly less energy, raw material and labor than the Pidgeon process. 80% lower capital intensity than electrolytic plant designs.
Patent-Protected
U.S. patents cover both the production method and the nozzle condensation system. Additional trade secrets protect key elements.
Restoring Domestic Production
Magnesium is ranked among the highest supply-risk critical materials by both the U.S. and EU. 95% of global supply comes from China, with zero primary production in the United States or Europe. USGM’s technology is purpose-built to change that — bringing a DoE designated “critical material” back to American soil.
DOE Partnership
Selected for HPC4EI alongside Ford, GM, Dow, and Toyota. Lawrence Livermore is supporting the development of our technology, providing access to some of the greatest experts and most powerful super-computer facilities in the world, enabling a rapid iteration loop of simulation, feedback and optimization.
